Amazing free test to see if you drink too much coffee.
Not only did Buzz Aldrin strike a blow for science, he got away with it.
From Christopher Hitchens’ essay The Stupidest Religion: ‘[U]nder the cover of pluralism a number of dogmatic orthodoxies acquire an undeserved respect and protection. An early example of this was the “shocked” reaction in 1987 when a Jerry Falwell clone named Bailey Smith observed that “God Almighty does not hear the prayers of a Jew.” This is the only instance known to me of an anti-Semitic remark having a basis in fact. After all, there is no such person as God Almighty and thus all prayer by all denominations has the same moral effect as aerobic dancing, if not less. But not even secular Jews thought of making this reply. Instead it was back to the discourse of injured innocence and “insensitivity.”‘
Trevor Blake: A Call to Heresy
I wrote A Call to Heresy in 1991. I uploaded it to a BBS in October 1991, and a version of that file is archived at textfiles.com. Jason Scott of textfiles.com also kindly hosts a mirror of OVO in pdf form. Call to Heresy was republished on a CD-ROM of public domain text distributed by Palm Computers. (mirror) Someone wrote me to say that they had named their domain after Call to Heresy. The essay was cited in the heresy trial of The Rt. Reverend Walter Righter [archive]. By 2002 I decided the Skeptic’s Annotated Bible did a better job at what I was trying to do with my Call to Heresy. In 2011 I’d also refer readers to the Big List of Quotes at Positive Atheism. But for the record, here it is directly from the author.

[The word "heresy"] comes from a greek noun form (hairesis) of a verb in the middle voice (haireisthai) meaning “to take for oneself” – to choose. This concept corresponds aptly to the conviction that there can be no faith without personal decision. [...] There are… two principle ways people arrive at convictions. If a person’s beliefs, however many or few, are to be really his, he should choose maturely which of the two ways appears the more sound and then apply its methodology to select or form such beliefs. This is his heresy: his choosing for himself. The results of such choosing may also be heresy in the other, more commonplace, sense of the word… Therefore, if both the positive and negative meanings of hairesis are taken into account, every truly believing individual is heretical in the positive sense, whether or not what he has chosen to believe is heretical in the negative sense.

In a short while, ten years will have passed since I compiled “A Call to Heresy.” I first wrote it as a way of gathering in one place certain Biblical quotations I found of interest. Every few years I would find a few more quotations to add or comments to delete and I would issue a new edition. I am proud of the way this document has inspired others both for and against its contents. I have seen copies of “A Call to Heresy” on many World Wide Web pages and other places on the Internet: one person even named his domain after it. I welcome comments and criticism about this text. Anyone who has published or distributed an earlier edition of this text is especially encouraged to use this newly formatted edition. Enjoy!

BALLYHOO – A free show given outside a side show to attract a crowd (a ‘tip’) of potential patrons. Word came into being at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The fakirs, gun spinners and dancing girls from the Middle East spoke no English, only Arabic. The interpreters used the expression “Dehalla Hoon” to call performers outside to the show fronts. The Western ears of the talkers translated it as ‘ballyhoo’ and so used it when the interpreters were away for lunch.
