In 1895 a number of ancient Greek-language documents were discovered in an ancient garbage dump outside the Egyptian city of Oxyrhynchus. The documents were too damaged by time to be read, but recent technical advances have allowed us to recover the texts. Among them is a 1,500 year old fragment from the Book of Revelation, the oldest (and therefore likely to be more authentic) fragment so far discovered. The fragment includes the famous lines about the ‘number of the beast,’ or the sign by which the faithful can know that the Anti-Christ walks the Earth. That number is… 616. Now that there is definite evidence that the number of the beast is not 666, I’m sure the publishers of Bibles will make the appropriate changes and Christians will amend their sermons and analysis of current events.
