Arthur Desmond – Ragnar Redbeard and "Might Is Right"

28 November 2008 » In books, satanism

Back in the year 1896 CE, a book entitled, Might is Right or The Survival of the Fittest by Ragnar Redbeard, LL.D. was published. The author was rumored to have been none other than red-haired poet, Arthur Desmond, born in New Zealand of an Irish father and English mother.

Claudine Beaumont: Vatican warns mobile phones are bad for the soul

28 November 2008 » In atheist, christianity, science

Father Federico Lombardi, the Pope’s spokesman, said that without a spiritual life, people risked losing their souls. “In the age of the cell phone and the internet it is probably more difficult than before to protect silence and to nourish the interior dimension of life,” Father Lombardi told the Vatican television show Octavia Dies. “It is difficult but necessary. There is an interior and spiritual dimension of life that must be guarded and nourished. If it is not, it can become barren to the point of drying up and, indeed, dying. Today, this is a very grave threat, and it is the most irreparable misfortune.”

[Article continues at link. The Roman Catholic Church, like all superstition clubs, places a great emphasis on the care and nurturing of the ghost organ that resides somewhere in or around your body that they call the "soul." Sometimes superstition clubs pull a bait-and-switch game with the ghost organ. First they talk about consciousness or morals or wonder or creativity and then they sneak in a claim that these are the "soul." But what they mean by "soul" is an ghost organ that resides somewhere in or around your body. This ghost organ has functions, like the detectable physical organs of the brain or heart or lungs. Every superstition club that talks about the ghost organ claims it alone knows how to take care of the "soul" and all the other superstition clubs are quacks. The superstition clubs are heavily invested in getting people to be very, very concerned about their ghost organs. Because the superstition clubs are doing absolutely nothing at all to help people in the real world. In the real world, plain old boring science has identified the universal mechanism of aging, designed an entirely new form of life, defined exactly what matter is, documented strange climate patterns on other worlds, directly observed planets orbiting distant stars, improved the mobility of the elderly... and that's what science has done just this month. Science is getting things done in the real world, something the superstition clubs have never done. Ever. Not ever, not once. That is why the superstition clubs are so heavily invested in getting people to be very, very concerned about their ghost organs, getting those ghost organs in shape to be judged by an invisible monster that lives in the sky so the ghost organs can be removed after death and transplanted into a metaphysical petri dish called "heaven." Superstition clubs focus on the imaginary because they have nothing real to offer when compared to science - or even art. - Trevor Blake]

Roger Cohen: A Command of the Law

Of the 770 detainees grabbed here and there and flown to Guantanamo, only 23 have ever been charged with a crime. Of the more than 500 so far released, many traumatized by those “enhanced” techniques, not one has received an apology or compensation for their season in hell. What they got on release was a single piece of paper from the American government. A U.S. official met one of the dozens of Afghans now released from Guantánamo and was so appalled by this document that he forwarded me a copy.

Dated Oct. 7, 2006, it reads as follows: “An Administrative Review Board has reviewed the information about you that was talked about at the meeting on 02 December 2005 and the deciding official in the United States has made a decision about what will happen to you. You will be sent to the country of Afghanistan. Your departure will occur as soon as possible.”

That’s it, the one and only record on paper of protracted U.S. incarceration: three sentences for four years of a young Afghan’s life, written in language Orwell would have recognized. We have “the deciding official,” not an officer, general or judge. We have “the information about you,” not allegations, or accusations, let alone charges. We have “a decision about what will happen to you,” not a judgment, ruling or verdict. This is the lexicon of totalitarianism. It is acutely embarrassing to the United States. That is why I am thankful above all that the next U.S. commander in chief is a constitutional lawyer. Nothing has been more damaging to the United States than the violation of the legal principles at the heart of the American idea.

As well as closing Guantanamo, Obama should set up an independent commission to investigate what happened there, as suggested in a fine recent report, “Guantanamo and its Aftermath,” from the University of California, Berkeley. Only then will “deciding officials” become identifiable human beings who can, if necessary be judged. Obama should also ensure that former detainees receive an apology and compensation. An American official showing up, envelope in hand, at some dusty Afghan compound and delivering U.S. contrition and cash to a man whose life has been ravaged by U.S. abuse, will in the long term make the United States safer.

John Cheves: Anti-terror law requires God be acknowledged

28 November 2008 » In christianity, fascism, theocracy

Under state law, God is Kentucky’s first line of defense against terrorism. The 2006 law organizing the state Office of Homeland Security lists its initial duty as “stressing the dependence on Almighty God as being vital to the security of the Commonwealth.” Specifically, Homeland Security is ordered to publicize God’s benevolent protection in its reports, and it must post a plaque at the entrance to the state Emergency Operations Center with an 88-word statement that begins, “The safety and security of the Commonwealth cannot be achieved apart from reliance upon Almighty God.”

State Rep. Tom Riner, a Southern Baptist minister, tucked the God provision into Homeland Security legislation as a floor amendment that lawmakers overwhelmingly approved two years ago. As amended, Homeland Security’s religious duties now come before all else, including its distribution of millions of dollars in federal grants and its analysis of possible threats.

[Article continues at link. The majority of the US government's internal response to 9/11 was a grab for money and power using claims of patriotism and protection from terrorists as a cover. This is not the first time such a redistribution of wealth occurred in the US, and perhaps it is the norm and nothing out of the ordinary. At the same time, it is especially objectionable to me that Christian theocracy snuck in the pen to feed with the other pigs at the troff. Right now the Bush administration is getting while the getting is good, considering a hand-out to the wealthier sectors of the US that will cost more than (and offer much less than) the Marshall Plan, the Louisiana Purchase, the S&L bailout, the Korean War, the New Deal, the Iraq war, the Vietnam war, and NASA's lifetime budget combined. Like the old saying goes: organized crime is for men who couldn't get organized enough to go into politics. - Trevor Blake]

There is not only the lack of a minimum marriage age in the Qur’an, but also the permission for child marriage implied by the permission to divorce prepubescent girls (Qur’an ), and of course, Muhammad’s own example in marrying Aisha at the age of 6 and consummating the marriage when she was 9.

Trevor Blake: Whimsy TAZ

28 November 2008 » In books, ovo, trevorblake, video, zine

Lord Whimsy describes the United Shires of America as a Temporary Autonomous Zone such as those described in the book TAZ. Some of the essays in TAZ first saw print in OVO 2, OVO 7 INFORMATION and OVO 11 CONTROL, published by Trevor Blake. And Trevor Blake made cushions for his couches to match Lord Whimsy’s book The Affected Provincial’s Companion. Thus the circle is made complete. Here are further musings from Lord Whimsy on the United Shires…

Like our Founding Fathers before us, We The People must summon the will to shed our bovine deference to The Powers That Be, boldly proclaim our sovereignty over ourselves, and then continue to reinvent American-ness to suit our own ends – and not just meekly accept what we are told it is. After all, what could possibly be more American? According to Thomas Jefferson, “Each generation is as independent as the one preceding, as that was of all which had gone before. It has then, like them, a right to choose for itself the form of government it believes most promotive of its own happiness…” I intend to take Mr. Jefferson at his word, for this is a muster – a Call to Charms!

I’m disturbed by our current mechanistic harshness, aesthetic brutalism, and the tendency towards monolithic, absolutist belief systems and methodologies. I propose a more humane way of life, and believe in the constant generation of modest, provisional notions that work within a limited sphere for a limited time – and then dissipate, much like living things. Through Affected Provincialism and a concept I call the “Lark-State,” I propose a means to implement this vaguely Jeffersonian/Franklinian sensibility. I believe that it is time for America to become new and weird again.

Imagine an archipelago of Arcadian enclaves sprouting through the dead, grey slab of the status quo. “Stars and Stripes,” meet the “Luna and Lightning Bugs!” “Old Glory,” may we present “Old Glamor!” The United Shires of America are a network of “pataphyical provinces” – mischievous aesthetic refuges. The United Shires exist in both the physical and non-physical realms, and can shift between the two very well. Finally, a country you can imagine, download, pack up, or wear on your back! It keeps down costs, and avoids legal and/or military entanglements.

[...] My grievances against our current day should not be seen as a plea to return to the past, but rather as a call to adopt what has worked well in the past, and create for ourselves a richer vision of the future than is currently offered us.
