Georgina Robinson: Muslim ban to protect Topless

30 December 2008 » In christianity, islam, theocracy

Conservative MP Fred Nile says he wants Muslims banned in NSW to protect Sydney’s topless bathing communities. The Reverend Nile has rejected allegations that prudishness is behind a bill he has prepared to ban Islam on the state’s most popular beaches. Australia’s reputation as a conservative but culturally inclusive sociery was at risk of erosion by more liberal overseas visitors, he said. “Our beaches should be a place where no one is offended, whether it’s their religious or cultural views,” he said. [...] “I think it’s important to respect all the different cultures that make up Australia. I don’t want to have any provocations or disturbances on our public beaches,” he said.

[Article continues at link. Of course my re-telling of the article above comes from the other tomorrow. In the other tomorrow conservatism is about less intrusion of the state on individual people's lives, and the conservation of what's worked so far rather than accommodating the most recent bullies. In the other tomorrow constantly appeasing an invisible monster that lives in the sky is less important than people relaxing in public once in a while. In the other tomorrow women getting some sun is better than women being compelled by theocratic law to be constantly covered to the point of contracting vitamin D deficiency disorders. And in the other tomorrow, nobody votes superstitious chowder-heads into office. Just to be clear, I don't advocate outlawing Islam or any other religion. I advocate the withering away of Islam and all other religions under the twin suns of reason and scorn. - Trevor Blake]

The threat of 9/11 ignored. The threat of Iraq hyped and manipulated. Guantánamo and Abu Ghraib. Hurricane Katrina. The shredding of civil liberties. The rise of Iran. Global warming. Economic disaster. How did one two-term presidency go so wrong?

The piece begins with Jankowski arising from Spencer’s congregation with a handy-video camera, approaching the pulpit, and collapsing at the pastor’s feet, while Spencer, speaking directly to the TV camera, delivers a sermon about art, preaching against a “one-dimensional view of painting” while praising contemporary art as “a bridge between religion, art, and television.”

Dudi Cohen: Iran orders Muslims to defend Palestinians

29 December 2008 » In islam, theocracy

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued a religious decree to Muslims around the world on Sunday, ordering them to defend Palestinians against Israel’s attacks on Gaza, state television said. “All Palestinian combatants and all the Islamic world’s pious people are obliged to defend the defenseless women, children and people in Gaza in any way possible. Whoever is killed in this legitimate defense is considered a martyr,” state television quoted Khamenei as saying in a statement outlining the fatwa.

[Article continues at link. I'm glad that the Supreme Leader is calling for Muslims to defend defenseless women, children and people. Maybe now he can get around to speaking out against how Muslims have child slaves. And how Muslims practice female genital mutilation. And how Muslims put people to death for blasphemy. And how Muslims blind women with acid to punish them for going to school. And how Muslims have offered 12,000+ human sacrifices to Allah since 9/11. - Trevor Blake]
