The Bronx and Morocco this week, and elsewhere, all over, on an ongoing basis – and why is it that fanatical Muslims so relish attacking Jews? Is it really all about Israel?
Anti-Semitism in the Islamic world has often been attributed to the baneful influence of Christianity. Many analysts assert that the Islamic designation of Jews (as well as Christians) as ‘People of the Book’ indicates a higher level of respect for them than was manifested by Christians who derided Jews as bestial ‘Christ-killers.’ Journalist Lawrence Wright writes in this vein in The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11: “Until the end of World War II [...] Jews lived safely – although submissively – under Muslim rule for 1,200 years, enjoying full religious freedom; but in the 1930s, Nazi propaganda on Arabic-language shortwave radio, coupled with slanders by Christian missionaries in the region, infected the area with this ancient Western prejudice [anti-Semitism]. After the war, Cairo became a sanctuary for Nazis, who advised the military and the government. The rise of the Islamist movement coincided with the decline of fascism, but they overlapped in Egypt, and the germ passed into a new carrier.”
This is a common view, but in reality there is a strong native strain of anti-Semitism in Islam, which is rooted in the Qur’an. The Muslim holy book contains a great deal of material that forms the foundation for a hatred of Jews that exists independently of the Christian variety. It is also, in many ways, more virulent and harder to eradicate. The Qur’an portrays the Jews as the craftiest, most persistent, and most implacable enemies of the Muslims – and there is no Muslim equivalent of the Second Vatican Council to mitigate against destructive interpretations. The Qur’anic material on the Jews remains the prism through which far too many Muslims see the Israeli-Palestinian conflict – and Jews in general – to this day.

A Southern California county will allow jailed Muslim women to wear headscarves after settling a lawsuit with a woman who claims that deputies violated her religious freedom by making her remove her hijab. The settlement agreement signed by the county last week and released Monday specifies that Muslim women must be provided a private area to remove their headscarves after arrest and must be provided with county-issued headscarves to cover themselves when they are in the presence of men. [...] Medina, 30, was arrested in December 2005 in Pomona for having an invalid train pass. She spent 12 hours in jail but was never prosecuted.
[Article continues at link. I predict that a Muslim group will demand to authorize the county-issued headscarves mentioned above to make sure that they are appealing to their particular invisible monster that lives in the sky, in the same way that Jewish groups authorize slaughterhouses to make sure that they are appealing to their particular invisible monster that lives in the sky. The difference is that eating meat from a slaughterhouse is optional while (for better and for worse) being arrested is not optional. Thus for the State to issue headscarves is the establishment of religion and a Constitutionally questionable act. On a site note, the arrest itself and processing afterwards is of some concern to me. Spending 12 hours in jail for riding on an invalid train pass seems excessive, as does a trial requiring three years to play out. - Trevor Blake]

The Dutch cabinet gave the nod Friday to a bid to scrap a legal ban on blasphemy, opting to expand hate speech beyond religious boundaries to include all groups of people. “The cabinet gives the prohibition of blasphemy a new form and place in the law,” said a statement from the justice ministry. “In future, it will be punishable to give serious offence to any group of people. There is no need any more for a separate provision for blasphemy.” The statement said there was no difference between insults aimed against people based on their race, religion, sexual orientation or handicap.
[Article continues at link. The natural and necessary outcome of this solution is its own dissolution. Because while attempting to protect religion as a generic concept it confronts the specifics of religion. Jews have hate speech in their Torah, Christians have hate speech in their Bible, and Muslims have hate speech in their Quran. The Torah commands Jews to kill everyone who isn't a Jew. The Bible commands Christians to kill everyone who isn't a Christian. And the Quran commands Muslims to kill everyone who isn't a Muslim. To enforce this law the Dutch must now ban the Torah, the Bible and the Quran. But of course this won't happen. What will happen is that the law will be on the books - as clear in its intent as are the Torah, the Bible and the Quran when they command their faithful to kill everyone else - but the law will not be enforced. I do not support hate speech laws and I do not call for the Torah, the Bible and the Quran to be banned. Just the opposite. I encourage everyone to read these books because there is no more sure path to abandoning them as a moral guide than to read what they actually advocate. - Trevor Blake]
