Valerie Boateng: New Beginnings loses lawsuit against Foxhole

19 June 2009 » In christianity, commerce, sex, theocracy

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by the owners of the New Beginnings Ministries near New Castle against Foxhole strip club and Sheriff Timothy Rogers, among others. The lawsuit claimed the club conducted illegal protests outside the church since at least January 2007 and the sheriff’s office failed to protect the church from the illegal activity. The defendants in the case said the protest activities took place in a public right of way that were protected by the First Amendment. [...] The suit filed in August 2007 [...] claimed Foxhole members entered and refused to remove themselves from his private property, blocked the entrance to the drive, stopped patrons and employees from entering the premises, surrounded patrons’ vehicles to preclude entrance, photographed patrons and employees against their will, and threatened patrons with adverse consequences as they persisted in visiting the facility.

BBC: Gay Muslim story for EastEnders

30 May 2009 » In islam, sex, television

EastEnders is to tackle a storyline which will feature a Muslim man embarking upon a gay affair. Newcomer Syed Masood, played by Marc Elliott, will fall for openly gay man Christian Clarke (John Partridge) and the pair will share an on-screen kiss. [...] Yusuf Wehebi from Imaan – an organisation that supports gay Muslims – agreed with him. “It is high time that the invisible minority became a visible minority,” he said. “It is entirely possible to be Muslim and gay and there’s many of us in Britain today.

[Article continues at link. Well, sure, it's entirely possible to be Muslim and gay. Just like it's possible to be a vegetarian and eat meat, or a virgin and have sex. As long as one of the two things you are is clearly defined and the other is a synonym of "being good" then you're good. If being a vegetarian, or a virgin, or a Muslim are your way of saying "being good" then you can "be good" and be anything else too. This is why religion spends so very much time claiming it is synonymous with morals and ethics and "being good." If you argue against religion, you're arguing against "being good." So if Yusuf Wehebi is gay and "good" and "good" means Muslim, then sure. But it's a kind of Muslim in which being a Muslim has nothing to do with being a Muslim. Not following the Quran, not following Muhamed, not following Muslim leaders, not following the Muslim majority, not following Muslim governments. If you take out all these, what is left of being a Muslim? If you have an axe consisting of a handle and a head, and you take off the head, and you take away the handle, do you still have the axe? Wehebi uses "Muslim" as shorthand for "being good." It's not unlike something recently posted at feminisnt [NSFW]: “In general, I’m tired of ‘feminist’ being used as a blanket qualifier to mean ‘awesome’, especially when it comes to the concept of feminist porn. I think ‘awesome’ works just fine as a qualifier for awesome.” Islam isn’t a good thing that a few people twist into something awful. Islam is something awful that a few people twist into something good. Rather than make one’s sexual behavior accommodate the superstitions of illiterate goat thieves from thousands of years ago, maybe… maybe it’s okay to just have sex and not worry about what an invisible monster that lives in the sky thinks about it. – Trevor Blake]
